I have the same problem, have tried everything mentioned so far but nothing works. I don't think this can be fixed.

I have the same problem on my Dell XPS M140 laptop. However, I installed Karmic on a new NetBook (HP Mini) and the wired connection works fine on it but not on Dell (running the same version of Ubuntu). It is puzzling and I have not been able to fix this problem.

I have solved this problem - pretty easily. Take a look at this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8378695).

Thanks for all your help. When I logged on the morning it just worked. Go figure. I was able to upgrade to 9.10. Hopefully it won't do it again.
