View Full Version : [ubuntu] 9.10: wifi gateway issues

i've got two ubuntu 8.x machines that were upgraded to 9.10.

the first machine (hog6) was set up about a year ago, and is using a USB wifi adapter via ndiswrapper (airlink 101). it's happy.

the second machine (hog10) was set up a few days ago on a wired connection with 8.x, upgraded to 9.10, and then i did the ndiswrapper thing (dlink dwl-g122 rev d1). this is the machine i'm having trouble with.

after some fumbling around (i killed those "set up USB wifi via ndiswrapper" brain cells), i got the thing to work enough to get on the wifi network. all done, thinks i. but noooo....

when i boot the machine, it connects to the wifi network. but i can only access local devices, and only by IP address, not by host name.

the setup is a verizon westell DSL modem at 192.168.1.1, which hooks to one of the switch ports of a DI-524 wireless router at 192.168.1.2 (the "WAN" port of the router is not used - i'm letting the DSL modem play router). the reset of the wired LAN attaches to the rest of the DI-524 switch ports, including a couple more switches.

both hog6 (old, happy ubuntu machine - 192.168.1.211) and hog10 (new, sick ubuntu machine - 192.168.1.212) are set up identically according to the "edit connections..." thing that pops up when you right click the network status icon - except of course for their static IP addresses.

==========================
hog10, after booting:

WORKS:

ping 192.168.1.1 (the DSL router)
ping 192.168.1.211 (hog6, the older wireless ubuntu machine)
ping 192.168.1.200 (hog5, a wired windows machine)

DOESN'T WORK:

ping scala.scala.com (where i once worked)
ping 12.178.193.240 (scala.scala.com's IP address)
ping hog6
ping hog5

==========================
hog10, after running "sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1" in a terminal window:

WORKS:

ping 192.168.1.1 (the DSL router)
ping 192.168.1.211 (hog6, the older wireless ubuntu machine)
ping 192.168.1.200 (hog5, a wired windows machine)
ping scala.scala.com (where i once worked)
ping 12.178.193.240 (scala.scala.com's IP address)

DOESN'T WORK:

ping hog6
ping hog5

==========================

the fun part is ALL of this works on hog6 after boot with no finagling (except hog6 can't ping hog10 by name). but as i said, i got hog6 working a long time ago and have no idea what i did now.

i'm not a unix jock, though i did write drivers for SVR4 on 386 multibus II many many moons ago. can anyone point me to a place where the equivalent of "route add default gw 192.168.1.1" needs to be stuffed (in the twisty tunnels of /etc, i assume) to make this work on startup?

i'm really only worried about the routing/internet DNS thing right now. the LAN hostname problems might be a side effect of whatever's misconfigured.
