I installed and thought about using aVast (for linux) but it does not have "real time" scanning especially for email. So, I removed aVast. Now I have AVG Free v8.5 installed but cannot get it to run. And ... from what I have seen here in the forum, there is no GUI with AVG. It is apparently strictly "command line" only. Correct me if I'm wrong. All I am looking for is a "good" AV/AS application primarily to scan "real time" email and do weekly scans of my computer, or "on demand scanning" when needed. I don't need any Windows AV/AS to scan Ubuntu since, mostly likely, the Windows app wouldn't scan Ubuntu anyway. Help please :mad::twisted:](*,)

Take a look at the the Anti-Virus section of the Ubuntu Security (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812) sticky. For the most part you don't need anti-virus on Linux, but if you still feel that you need/want an anti-virus there are a number of them mentioned in the sticky.

Thanks for the response - FuturePilot. I just feel much more confortable with some form of AV/AS on my computer especially when downloading emails. I am using MailWasher Free v6.3 to preview any emails in my Gmail mailbox and then using Eudora8 to actually download the emails. Without having some form of AV/AS scanning (real time) some one could send you a virus and such via their Windows OSs. Otherwise, I probably would not be terribly concerned. Thanks for the link. Will check it out. Again .. thanks. ;-)

Also bear in mind that any AV program that you do use will only scan for Windows viruses.

The only time you ever need AV on a Ubuntu system is if you are running a file or mail server and want to protect any Windows clients.

I use Thunderbird, of the one or two viruses I've seen Thunderbird considers them an attachment, so it makes it easy to tell if the email has a virus.

Remember the majority of viruses are written for Windows, so they will not run on a Linux based system.

Not exactly true, there are a few that are generally known by scanners such as this one (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-052312-2729-99).

Hmmm, if you guys manage to catch a Linux virus please send me a copy. I have been using UNIX systems since 1984 on several thousand machines and I have not seen a single virus yet.

Soooooo, forget about viruses and rootkits and other Windows crapware. Relax and enjoy your Linux system!
