View Full Version : [ubuntu] Simplest Filesharing solution , Please

I have three ubuntu desktops and a Mac , behind a router .
I only need to share small files with the Mac , so Dropbox is a good solution for this . Also Dropbox makes a good backup for these documents .
The other computers , we pass photos , movies , etc , so Dropbox would be very slow , because of the uploading .
Right now I am using Samba to share these files . For me it is always touchy getting Samba set up , and I am wondering if there is something simpler , and perhaps faster ?

Also , my router has firewall but I don't really understand firewalls , servers , networking etc , that well .I have the wireless set to accept only certain MAC addresses , I am assuming that is pretty safe for home use .I guess the DSL is protected by Windstream ? Can someone recommend a simple tutorial on those such matters , so a beginner can understand ?

If I read (and remember) correctly Mac can use NFS. Here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=249889) is a How-To.
FTP might be another option - Another (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=218630) How-To, (or two (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=79588))
