Hey ubuntu geek,
Thank you for such a warm welcome. I am a relative newbie. I have been trying to instal ANY form of linux on my sony vaio PCG FRV37 since last 1.5 years but have constantly failed. I have now given up my pride and joined the forum!
The best I have managed is to pay a technician to run me a dodgy windows OEM despite having my own original sony vaio recovery disks that do not work! Even windows 7 beta version I could not properly install. All versions of linux including up to ubuntu 9.10 and mandrix have failed to install. I have been running a new 100 GB hard drive after my original one crashed in 2006. I do not know if all this is related to a motherboard virus or what. Since I have no data on this computer I do not mind disclosing technical info to some intelligent geek out there.I am currently able to browse internet and use word documents with windows. I cannot do automatic updates that is why I think this may be a dodgy windows.I am fed up of windows and want to run any form of linux possible so that my son can start using this laptop for children's internet educartional activities, games etc.

Please help. cheer ARJ

Does a live CD work?

If so, you could try a clean install in stead of Windows (not using Wubi, but installing straight from the live CD). If you suspect your Windows is ill you will have to wipe the drive anyway.

Don't know if you still reading this, but I have a Sony laptop exactly like yours, and it runs Ubuntu just fine; right now, running Karmic Koala.
Are you using the 32 bits version, right?
