8.04.3 on T5500 800x600 graphics NVidia Quadro NVS295 -- can't increase resolution

I installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my new Dell T5500 which came with an NVidia Quadro NVS 295 graphics card. The card was not recognized. The resolution was limited to 800x600. I tried installing the nvs-glx-new package, but it only caused my screen to go black and I had to re-install Ubuntu from CD.

Can Ubuntu 8.04 be made to run on the T5500 and what do I need to do to resolve my resolution problem?
