I'm use to doing it in Photoshop (years ago)

But how to do it in Gimp?

p.s. searched the Gimp website but too much info. there to piddle through

You wouldn't happen also to know how to reduce the size of an image to an Avatar acceptable kilobyte size would you [resizing small in the process].

Image->Scale Image?

Or do you mean saving in a small file size? depends on how much you compress when you save it.
