what does

lsusb

and

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages say, with the 160 plugged in;

the sad thing is folks install new software; that has problems;

our Huawei E160 has run perfectly on easy peasy 1.0 (based on Ubuntu 8.04 I think .........)

and our 160 has also run perfectly on Xandros linux on a 701;

leading edge software sometimes leads one off a cliff

my English it's very basic so i'm not sure if I understand you.
You suggest me to type "lsusb" and "sudo tail -f /var/log/messages" in the terminal with the modem Huawei E160 plugged in and than will install a software (easy peasy 1.0)?

no

those commands will ask the computer to say if it sees the modem
