View Full Version : Capture Card Advice

I'm rebuilding my MythTV on Gentoo system and moving to a MythBuntu base. This machine will be solely a backend, I use a MediaMVP and Xbox as frontends. I currently have a Hauppauge PVR-150 that can be used if need be. But am looking to get a capture card that can record digital and the unencrypted HD channels offered by Comcast. I'd prefer dual tuners on a card, but if need be can use the old PVR-150 instead. My question is, does anyone have a suggestion as to which of these cards would be best and compatible in Mythbuntu. I'm currently planning 2 gigs of ram and an Intel Celeron E3200 Wolfdale 2.4GHz, if that matters.

Hauppauge HVR-1250 PCIExpress
pcHDTV HD-5500 PCI
Hauppauge HVR-1600 PCI
Avermedia AVerTVHD Duet PCTV tuner (A188) PCIExpress
Another Suggestion?

I have both of the pcHDTV HD-5500 PCI and Hauppauge HVR-1600 PCI. I prefer the pcHDTV HD-5500, the tuner isn't as sensitive and it supports multirec.

Other suggestions might include the silicondust HDHomerun

While not a pci card the HDHomerun works very well. I use it with my current system subscribed to RCN cable. I hear it works very well with OTA signals.

Another one I saw would be the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250. In input or experience with this card?

I'm also very, very happy with my pcHDTV HD5500 card and use it for the same purpose - unencrypted HDTV and digital cable channels. It has always "just worked" with mythtv.

I just bought a Hauppauge HVR 950Q USB device a couple of days ago for its QAM tuning and have been very satisfied. It was very simple to get going in MythTV.

There is a HVR-2250 thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=942403) already with info on getting digital capture working. Apparently analog does not work yet, which may or may not matter to you.

I bought a HVR-1250 for $50. It records digital but I don't think analog is supported. It also comes with a small form factor bracket. Mythbuntu picked it right after the initial installation.
