I've been recommended the TRENDnet TEW-424UB USB Wireless Network. Have just sent for one from a well known auction site, will post here if it works.

The adaptor arrived, I disconnedted from my network, plugged it in, reconnected and BINGO - full connectivity,signal and speeds back to normal!
