I just installed wine and i was wondering how it really works. i cant seem to get it to do what i want it to. i dual boot vista and karmic, and i was wondering how do i play the games that i have installed on my vista partition using wine? when i browse the C:/ my program files are not listed, nor is my users desktop folder. and can i download and use .exe programs from the internet using wine? it just seems a little confusing to me and i dont want to damage my machine. ive read a lot of postings saying that they had to reinstall due to wine crashing... i dont want to be like them. thanks in advance

Howdy,
Just to throw out there - Wine will not crash your system, at worst you will mess up your Wine settings and just need to reinstall (just) Wine.
On to your question - for most applications you are going to reinstall them under Wine. When Wine is installed it creates it's own "fake" C:/ drive on your Linux partition (it doesn't point itself to your Windows). While it is possible to run some applications right from Windows - at times this can cause issues and for a beginning user it is simplest to just reinstall the applications under Ubuntu using Wine.
Have any other questions or if any of the above need clarification let me know.
Regards,
~Jeff`
