Hello. I am having a very difficult time getting this game to play properly. I installed it, the update, and whenever the game is downloading maps the game will suddenly just quit.

My brother said it was displaying a message to set CVAR to 01 or something like that.

From all the posts I've read it seems that people are having problems with this game also. I dual-boot with W7 and that's giving me a hard time also.

Is there NO LOVE for old video cards these days??? I am running...trying to run this game off my Thinkpad R51e which has 128mb of dedicated ram for it and also will take some extra from the system RAM. The graphics is supplied by the ATI Radeon X200M.

I had problems with this card in Jaunty. It wouldn't process sound right so I'm very pleased that I don't have that infinite sound-sample going throughout my whole Ubuntu session.

I really would like to play an FPS or RPG on my setup. Nothing that is terribly demanding and is free.

TIA.

Hmmm...no one responded? Anyhoo.

I downloaded and installed the Punkbuster Update via a GUI .run file. I was playing for a little bit before class and didn't get kicked off once.

It's a pretty strange experience to come from Windows and where all you have to do is click on an .exe package and it self-extracts to the appropriate folders. There is a dichotomy between wanting to have an OS different than MS. However I wish the simplicity of some MS executions leaves me wishing a double click-to-install method would be integrated here.

I dragged my .run file into the terminal and added sudo at the beginning of the created file name to install. Hope someone can tell me if that was the right thing to do??? I worry about issuing sudo commands from some threads that I've read.

Your integrated video chipset is really not up to Quake Wars: ET. It was fairly high-end when it came out and it played really well on a 8800 GTS, but that was also a high-end card at the time (still good now, though mine got fried and I picked up a GTS 250). ET is a fairly demanding game.

Or are you referring to Wolfenstein: ET? In that case you would meet about the minimum requirements, which also isn't all that optimal.

Have you looked at Nexuiz? It is in the repos and a fairly decent shooter that "should" run on your system. I believe it is in the repos, too.

The X200M isn't meant for gaming, so there are limitations.

My brother has an old emachines desktop that has the desktop version of the X200. I remember I installed Half-life (1 not 2) onto his machine and it ran. Not too bad if I remember correctly. I see the minimum requirements and my x200m seems to have more than 32mb of dedicated video ram. I also have 1.5 gb of RAM so it's definitely more than the 128mb the minimum requirements are asking for.

A little off-topic but my old Thinkpad can do Aero and Aero-peek in W7.

Anyway. I only played for a couple of minutes and haven't optimized the system settings to my liking yet.

I'll tell you this... I've had more success using the Linux version than the windows version.

EDIT:

The Enemy Territory I'm playing is Wolfenstein. I am aware I'm limited. I am not a hardcore gamer but was just curious and wanted to see how an FPS ran on my old TP.

You should definately meet the specs to play Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory... I used to play a lot back in college on my Dell Inspiron 8200 with a Geforce 440 Go card, which is similar but had its own video memory.

I wonder if it is a problem with the graphics driver you are using with that card, I know I've heard that sometimes ATI cards don't get the best performance and have some issues.

Anyway a fun game that doesn't take a lot of graphics or speed is Battle for Wesnoth, which is in the repos, it is a turned based fantasy strategy game.

sudo apt-get install wesnoth

ps. now I have the urge to play some WolfET, what a great game.

):P Hi Dre.

I was able to play the game this afternoon. I haven't tried again yet. The path to correctly install the game was a trial-and-error scenario for me. I still am not sure if I have installed it correctly.

I believe the open source drivers for my card are working fine. Glxgears was able to run from terminal command. Not the most impressive scores but at least 3D rendering work! I also downloaded and played with Compiz effects for awhile. I turned it off after that. I'm not too much on eye-candy unless someone I know wants to see what the cube and all those nifty effects are exactly :)

For more advanced gaming needs I usually use my old Gamecube (don't laugh :p) and our desktop.

Same problem here. Just join the non-punkbuster servers. There aren't many around but it can at least let you play. I'm actually talking about true-combat, a mod. But the installed ET gives the exact same error.
