Is there a way to dual boot windows on a Starling Netbook without the benefit of a USB DVD drive? I have a Win XP Pro install disk, but of course the Starling has no optical drive. Can I somehow make a thumbdrive image of the disk and use that? Assuming that's technically and legally kosher, how would I do that?

I'm not exactly sure, but I'm *thinking* that to remain legally blameless, you may need to get (or borrow?) an external DVD drive.

Normally I'd say use VirtualBox. But that is best on a machine that is not using Netbook specs as that is some pretty manly emulation you would be sporting there. Soooo, you could give this link (http://www.pctipsbox.com/installing-windows-xp-using-a-usb-flash-drive/) a shot. Think you will need an XP machine to prep the flash drive, but it would be doable on another Ubuntu box with XP virtualized however.
Scary fine print: This is for informational purposes only. You and you alone are responsible to abide by Lord Ballmer's "10 commandments of Microsofting responsibly" within the Windows EULA. There is no spoon, I am not an animal. Testing to see if anyone actually reads these things.

I have a Hannspree netbook. Just installed Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10.iso. on it. I, like you, have no optical drive. The way I did it was download Virtual clone drive from slysoft.com. It's a free download and easy to use. It creates a virtual optical drive making an external drive unnecessary. I selected the dual boot option upon installation. Installed very easily. I am as new as they come when it comes to anything to do with any type of Lynux. So if that doesn't give you some kind of reassurance that this is easy to do than I don't know what will.
