Beside the OS, beside the daily editors, managers and clients, beside all tools, tweaks and utils, there are and exist specialized programs for specific industrial use. Basically they manage dedicated hardware, and that hardware is quite expensive, and used for serious operation purposes. And its operation is of course important.
The software is bound to a particular OS. Thus, ones become double-dependent, who operate this software for their business. The new software-version requires the new OS. And, the new OS requires new software for everything. This endless cycle costs (and brings) money.
Let's forget about games and GUI beauty for a moment.
