I just want Co-Op so me and my friend can play it together. There are so very few PS3 games where you can play with a physical friend two feet away from you...

Probably not for a few reasons.
The single player modes are extremely short. I beat MW in a few hours and I am not a hardcore gamer.
This means the only good part was multiplayer but it had a bunch of flaws too.
The ranking system is terrible. If you don't get the game on release day and devote all of your free time to it for the next few months, you're going to fall behind. Everyone is the high levels with decked out weapons and you're stuck with the terrible guns.
"Features" like grenade launchers, last stand and martyrdom were terrible.
Now, I hear they're getting rid of private servers. You'll have to play on their servers and by their rules. This is to combat piracy since dedicated servers don't check for key codes. Lots of people were playing cracked copies.
This is terrible. PC gamers made the game great, ever since the first release. We had all custom maps and custom guns for sniper levels.
While MW had a lot of bells and whistles, they took the game in a completely different direction, shafted the players that made it popular and are going to turn a great big profit.

i WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the rest of your post, but this...
ranking system is totally fine. it doesn't take months to achieve that stuff unless you want to prestige multiple times over. once you've leveled up even halfway, you've got all the weaps you'll need that are worth a damn.
i don't know why you think the 'nade launchers or martyrdom are crap (although i don't use martyrdom) there are lots of other perks to choose from.

I don't like noob tubes because you don't even have to be accurate. Let fly and instant kill. Even multiple kills in some places like the level with the radio station. Wave after wave of people coming out that door.
Martyrdom is terrible because you killed the dude and now they start dropping grenades upon death. Nonsense. Maybe if it required a keystroke as soon as you die with a very short window to press it, that'd be fine but instantly dropping a grenade upon death? No. That's terrible.
I didn't like multiplayer. There's be 30 level 55 (or whatever the highest is) and then a level 2 player would show up and they'd just gank him repeatedly.

Except levels mean absolutely nothing in the game and the best weapons are available at level 1.

Absolutely. I still play United Offensive sometimes... and so do many others looking at the servers.
Modern Warfare was good... because of dedicated servers. Same thing without? I'll let the kiddies play that.
And I think they'll find that their servers do nothing to combat piracy nor do they make the on line experience 'more enjoyable.'

I am tempted not to because asking $59.99 for a PC game with no dedicated servers is too much. For that same price I can probably get left for dead 2 pre-ordered and a cheaper discount game.

No, I don't buy into the "pay us 60$ and you get to use this piece of restricted proprietary software until we decide you don't want to any longer" business model. And according to the wine appdb, it doesn't even run on wine, so I'm not sure why we're having this discussion in the first place?
It's just another proprietary MS/Sony-only piece of crap shooter that gets re-released every year with increased system requirements. It's crap like this that gets people addicted to proprietary platforms like windows and the gaming consoles.

They ruined everything good about the multiplayer on PC too. There is only matchmaking (no dedicated servers!) and it's 18 players max (9v9).
If I had a console I'd buy it, but I'm certain they've lost the majority of PC gamers including me.

I don't see how my comment warrants that response. I understand we're asked to provide our opinion of the product in this thread? Unfortunately, I don't play games like that, so I'm not qualified to say much on its merits as a game, but I think I did give a pretty accurate assessment on it's influence on Free Software.

I'm pretty sure discussion of the software licence it's released under and the business model it's marketed under are within the scope of the discussion. And in any case, I just wanted to bring my viewpoint to the attention of people who might otherwise not be aware of how buying into this kind of proprietary software and restrictive business models infringes on your freedom.

I'm a rabid free software enthusiast and a PC gaming enthusiast. I happily play games with Windows, knowing that it is a really good OS for games, at least until OpenGL gets a foothold (which could still happen). I am very skilled in the art of enjoying things :)
Of course, a big reason here is probably because I view games as a bit of an art form. They are not designed to be needed, so there is no real practical reason why they MUST be open source. I think the platform needs to be open source since people and programs all depend on it, but beyond that it is fair game. (Granted, I would like for this stuff to be open source, but change takes time and favours those who are patient).
However, I too haven't found much interest in MW2. I will probably play it at some point, since - like Star Trek - all the odd numbered COD games since 1 (the Treyarch ones) are horrifyingly lame and all the even numbered ones (the Infinity Ward ones) are really great.
I liked how they did COD 4 from the perspective of story-telling, at least in some parts. The cutscenes during loading screens were brilliant, since I never felt like I was waiting for it to load Ever. While they have always done it, they added another layer of depth to the way they bounce the player between different characters. Being in the shoes of the guy who gets kidnapped and assassinated is really a unique way to tell a story and shows off an a real strength of the medium. Similar deal with the sniper mission.
However, I think the "modern warfare" thing is getting pretty tiresome, and COD MW2 really looks like more of the same. (Even down to the multiplayer, which has a lot of wasted potential thanks to that STUPID class system which doesn't work because there is a program you can download that unlocks everything in half a second. Then again, I play Project Reality for my multiplayer shooting, so my preferences are obviously a bit warped).
Once I am finished with Dragon Age, I may give its demo a try...
Mr. Picklesworth
November 8th, 2009, 06:30 PM
No demo unfortunately. Looks like pirating is the only way to try it out.
OT: How is Dragon Age? Can I run it nicely with my conf. ? And are weapons and equipment randomly spawned or are there pre-set items like in Baldurs Gate? A mix perhaps?
I think it's a mix. I haven't done much saving and loading and repeating, since that tends to kill the illusion in an RPG. (Especially this one. Lots of things that feel non-linear are actually VERY linear with a line of dialogue to make the difference).
Runs happily on my laptop with an 8600M GT so long as I turn off the full-screen visual effects. (Which make an obvious difference to the tone, but I have managed to not miss them too much).
It bothered me that I was greeted by a solicitor (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/11/6/) trying to sell me some downloadable content within the first few hours of gameplay. (Really, he appeared in my camp, told me about a really interesting sounding quest that seemed relevant to the storyline and only after I was interested it turned out that I would have had to pay them more money. Nasty).
The way party members interact is kind of cool.
The storyline is pretty mundane and typical so far. The Witcher beats it on that front, all their claims to the contrary. The back-stories for all the characters are interesting enough, so I expect them to save it.
It is very, very big.
I miss being able to break into peoples' houses, getting into fights with the innocent and being arrested by guards.

I may purchase it when I can get it used from GameStop. I liked MW on my PS3, and it's one of the few games I played with my cousins over PSN.
I didn't like how short the single player campaign was. I was a complete noob and I beat the game in a couple hours. I recently revisited it and managed to beat it on Hard difficulty in under 24 hours.
I guess it really depends on if my cousins buy it because I'm not a fan of the multiplayer and I'm guessing the single player campaign will be as short as MW1; so it's not really worth the large price tag to me just to beat single player in a few hours.

I was a complete noob to MW and I could have saved a ton of money if i just rented it, if I only wanted to play single player. Even on Veteran mode or w/e the campaign was one of the shortest single player games I have beaten ever. Veteran mode was just more frustrating because the npc's had better aim and you had less life. That's not more story, it's just more time playing the same stage over because you stuck your head out to far or some other BS.

This. I *might* torrent it for the SP and MP if they crack it, but there is now way I'll give money to IW. Not after they called having mouse support a feature. Dice will get my money when Battlefield Bad Company 2 comes out. They already promised me my servers and huge player counts.

Isn't that the case with virtually any FPS out there? If I play ANY FPS on easy, I'll beat it in a matter of hours. You don't even have to shoot anything, you can just run through the levels.

To be fair, veteran makes it so you have to run through all the levels. There's no way short of blind luck that you can kill everything in sight, but your teammates won't move up unless you do. So what ends up happening is that the most expedient way to get through all the levels is to shoot the enemies that will kill you when you move up, move up, and watch as your invinciteam cleans up the rest.
Best way to get mile high club for sure.
And no, I won't. No linux support, and I don't have my 360 here, so no real point. Not booting into windows for an FPS. Now Mass Effect 2 on the other hand . . .

no you aren't alone to feel that storyline in games is like storyline in porn. Some might like it, but it isn't as good as a proper story.. like from a book, manga or a film for an example.
When I heard there was no dedicated server it was obvious it wasn't going to be a big hit for gamers. Which is strange as I thought Infinity Ward knew what gamers want.... wasnt expecting them to turn all EA on us.
The ranks arent too annoying, when I reinstalled cod4 I was leveling up 2-3 ranks per round depending on the size of the servers.
And you only need to get to level 8 for the Ak47 and 27ish to get Ak74u so you are pretty quick to get the only guns that is worth having.
But the only thing you will need to level up for is the bandoiler perk and deagle.
Not that ranks matter at all as you'd only play on PAM or PROmod servers anyway.

You like killing zombies too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We must eradicate them muhahaha
Doesn't everyone? lol. It's just a very fast-paced game designed completely for co-op play, for me that's all I could want.

COD 4: Modern warfare works perfectly for me on steam using wine.
But i dont feel like spending 60€ to check if Modern warfare 2 works too. =)

I liked the first CoD, I didn't play CoD 2 or 3, and I didn't like CoD 4. The single player campaign was crap. I also couldn't stand the canned death animations, there is no excuse for that in a modern shooter. I will consider the new one if they fixed these issues.

PC version already has hackers. Good job IW, if you gave us ded servers we wouldn't have this problem.

ok so, the game doesnt start using latest wine 1.1.32.
When i start the game, i get this error message
"Installation incomplete"
Of course, the download went fine to 100%.
But if i choose to start steam off-line, the installation process goes a bit further, to then block a few second later installing Direct X.
I tried to use advices provided by steam going here https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9851-PFHN-9932&l=french
I used the mentionned settings into my routeur to get correct ports opened, without results...

Maybe start a thread in our wine forum for support. This is not the thread or correct forum for wine/window games support.
Thanks.

I prefer Call of Duty- World at War. For me there's nothing like gritty WWII action. None of this 'infrared this' and 'satellite that'. Just you, your trusty M1 and a big pair of balls :D

true true and true..
but the lack of dedi servers was not a result of cracked servers.
all cod servers check with the master and make sure that ur keycode is legit. cracked servers were checking in with a bogus master server and letting pirated keycodes play on that cracked server.
i,personally , think that the lack of no mods and dedi's are more a result of pride and money-not pirating.
u can make a dedi server at home... when u and ur 4 friends play on that server(with the same keycode) the master realizes it and kicks u all off
wait till valves masters go down u wont be playing at all...
last week valve was down for a bit but i was still playing cuz i logged on to my dedi thru console.
thats the difference
