I got an old ibook and and old g4 powerbook with CD drive only. I'd like to put 9.10 on them, but they iso is 705Mb and wont go onto a 700Mb disk. This is a strange oversight and I'm certain there is a fix for it. Oddly, searching these forums for 9.10 and 705Mb didn't come up with any hits.

Does the computer have USB ports? Make a USB installer.

Does the computer have USB ports? Make a USB installer. Man that is a lot of work for something that shouldn't be an issue anyway. I downloaded 9.10 minimal installer and kicked it off that way. The install is taking 10 times longer than it should, but it'll get installed.

You should be able to overburn a CD. I've fitted 720MB onto a CD by overburning. The extra 5MB shouldn't be to much of a problem.

If you have any Ubuntu version already installed then it's pretty easy.
Install unetbootin from the repos sudo apt-get install unetbootin
Run it, select an iso file, select usb drive and let it do its thing.
Then just boot up from the USB drive.

It won't work on PPC, at least not on a usb one version.

UPDATE: Mini failed. It went through the entire install, but then booted to a black screen. I couldn't switch to a Virt Term (Alt +F1) either.
I'm installing 8.04 from a CD that I once put on an iBook, so I it know works, and I'm then going to do a dist upgrade. Wish me luck.

Which planet are you from that makes this a lot of work. You download the iso and from there you can either put it on a CD or put it on a USB. It's the same amount of time/effort either way, no difference.

I'd redownload it from another mirror, i can't find any version with your size here [1].

Well, the alternate version is over 700MB, but the desktop version (the one you need) is 645 MB;)
doesn't matter if you use 32, or 64 bit...
So, I guess that you just have the wrong release version!

It's the same amount of time/effort either way, no difference.Ever boot an old white ibook from a usb? it IS a lot of work if it will work at all. Also, these things have old and finicky CD drives. I haven't tried, but I'm thinking it will have a problem recognising a non standard (overburned) CD.

Yeah, downloaded the netbookremix yesterday, and that one is 681MB as well...
Guess that there are some updates in the iso already, to clean up some bugs...
But, they'll keep in mind that your disc is just 700MB, and that it ain't meant to be to burn them over...

Wow, a CD image over 700MB. Can you believe it!
I was downloading the server image which I now see is 717MB. In fact, thank goodness we are not on ia64 architecture, because their desktop "CD" is 804MB: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/karmic/release
Not to be negative or anything, but this situation is likely to cause a lot of frustration, even for Linux veterans, especially for those with slow and expensive Internet access like we have here in Africa. I know the PPC image is community supported, but I have always been under the impression that these images are at least tried once, by one person before being released - but if they can't fit on a CD that theory must be wrong!
Can we not put a little banner up on the download website? That says "don't spend a day downloading this because it can't even fit on a CD!?"
