I'm looking to get back into web design and start a few websites, but I have very little money.

My priorities are:

1) Not expensive startup. If I have to pay 2 years in advance to get a competitive price, then its no go.

2) High or no limits on DBs, emails, subs, and ftp accounts.

3) Preferrably, SSH access.

4) Good uptime.

5) Competitively Priced.

Looked at rackunlimited.com, their prices are very good, but the company's less than a year old, which makes me hesistant. Any suggestions?

I noticed a thread in community market about fivebean.com, apparently ran by a forum moderator here. Anyone have any experience with them?

$1/month for 5 domains and 50gb a month is very cheap for shared hosting, and $5/month for a 128mb VPS. Very good deals. I only wonder how those prices are profitable.

I'd recommend Linode (http://www.linode.com/index.cfm). The cheapest plan is $20; I host with them, and it's been great.

I had a linode for a while. I agree its a nice service, but $20 is over my budget at the moment. My next few websites I intend to operate for a profit, to some degree. Much harder to overcome $240 a year than it is $12/year.

I have been using ThisWebHost (http://www.thiswebhost.com/) for over 6 months and they have been great. Read their website. It will tell you everything you need to know.

DreamHost. $9.95/month and there are plenty of $97 off (maximum referrer discount) coupons you can find on the net.

I'v recently switched to hostgator (http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml), and I've found them to be quite nice, of course after 2 yrs with godaddy, It could just be that anything else is nice.

But in my time with them I have found support is good, and they are quick to help with any problems you might be having. They Do have SSH and the plans are affordable with a reasonable amount of goodies.

I personally use fivebean and so far they have been great. My site loads fast and so far has been very reliable as well (it has been several months since I signed up and I have noticed zero downtime for my site -- I have a shared account, so I can't comment on their VPS deals).

The customer service is supposedly very good, but the best thing about it is that I have never had to actually use their support system, everything just works. :)
