View Full Version : Spam links in sigs

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately which look reasonably valid, until you see there are a bunch of spam links in the signature.
I think it would be a good idea to disable hyperlinks in signatures unless users have been members for a certain length of time and have a certain number of posts.

No no, not like that. Like this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1317612
I've reported that so hopefully it will be gone soon though.
I mean where the poster is obviously a spam bot, and they have a bunch of advertising links in their sig. A lot of the time they will post in a thread with a generic message that could be a reply to anything.
Edit: Noticed the smiley face, so maybe you do know what I meant :)

They didn't actually put the links into the signature. His link "sig" shows up in the quoted text when you hit reply. Signatures don't show up in the quoted text.
Lousy spammers are being sneaky. I can't believe I didn't see the links before I replied.
I also reported the other post that person made about a different show that he also linked to in a fake sig.

Ahh ok, maybe that wasn't a good example then. I haven't really checked whether other posts use an actual sig or just underscores that make it look like a sig. Maybe a mod will know. If they're all just "fake" sigs, then this idea won't be much help.

Some do in fact use sig spam, I have also seen spam in an avatar :(
It is a pain - carry on reporting please ;)

It seems I end up reporting spam a couple times a week. Occasionally the new username posts a message to each section of the forum. That takes awhile to report all the message since the forum makes me wait 60 seconds between hitting the report button. I usually set the countdown feature on my phone and keep all the spam messages open and click report on one every phone beeps.
The mods are usually pretty quick. If a new username posts more than about 7 spam messages I never get to report all of them because they all disappear along with the username!

I just report one of the messages and include a note in the report that the users other posts are all spam too.

Generally I would say just report one if there are a bunch - we look for other posts by the same user.
Luckily they get picked up quickly so they don't hang around for too long ...

I didn't think of that. If I sit an report a ton of messages from the same spammer I'm kinda spamming the mods!

I'll definitely just report the first one I see and mention if their recent activity shows more. It should've been obvious to me that the mods can probably find the recent activity just as fast as I can if not faster.

Well remember they're busy. Whether it's with real life issues or they're handling another problem in the forums. Patience is key. ;)

No, I don't believe that. The staff have time and again requested members use the report button.
For example see bodhi.zazen (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=89054) response here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1281138&page=9). Just one of many similar responses I've viewed in the forum.
But, as Tipped OuT points out - patience is the key.

Well the spamming seems to be pretty well controlled. Most of the spam I report is gone within 10 minutes and I only end up seeing spam on here a couple times per week at the most. I'm clearly not the only one reporting it. :D
I don't see why people thinking spamming a support forum is a good thing. There are forums that allow advertising, why can't the spammers just stay there?

If you think about it, we all know why they come here and other similar sites to spam. I suspect it's tough for the staff to keep track of, unless reported.

There might be a solution next time the forums get an upgrade.
The staff are aware of the problem.
I haven't said too much ;)
Keep up the report of spammers :KS
