dead keys are dead

For some days now my dead keys are dead in KDE apps. They work nicely in firefox, e.g.. they do not work in any KDE-app. I looked in system settings for country/keyboard. I used german/standard and switched through all the variantes, restarted applications.... nothing helps.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3.2

Any hints?
