is there a way to run windows and linux side by side? (linux up front and windows in back-round, or windows up front and linux running in back-ground).

Install Virtual Box, either the open source version from the repositories or the one from sun (the one from sun has more options).

I have this setup running on my machine because i often have to use windows based applications that cannot run in ubuntu. So i use VMware for linux on my ubuntu machine and windows inside of it. It has worked out pretty well. But installing vmware was a little cumbersome.
