Does anyone know where to get some dirt cheap computers that will work as servers. Preferably one that doesn't use much power.

The dump, or your school's IT department.

Save your $200.00 for hard drives, get out there and do some dumpster diving. :)

What's the purpose of the server? What are you serving?

Garage sales.

Way better deals than craigslist/ebay and you can haggle.

Get some sort of Mini-ITX motherboard with an Atom or a Pentium M, some sort of power supply and a little fan, cut a few holes into a Tupperware container for some airflow and you've got yourself a beautiful little server.

If you're not a do-it-yourself kind of person, you could buy a "nettop".

If you go dumpster diving or buying old computers, you're almost certain to find a computer that will chew through the watts, and probably won't be as powerful as an Atom anyway.

Now, that is sexy. It probably costs twice as much here in Europe, though.
