Well, I finally got around to installing Karmic on the Wild Dog, and hope the first part of this post will help others.

I had delayed installing on the desktop for a number of reasons, one of which was I had no sound from the live CD. A quick check with Tom assured me it wouldn't be a problem. Well, it was. I did a clean install and had no sound. Thankfully, as anyone who has dealt with System76 can attest, Tom was ready to help and gave me a few ideas, unfortunately, none of them worked, but we kept plugging away.

Long story short...

My Wild Dog must be a little different than the one they currently have in house, because they do not behave the same way. It turned out that the speaker jack, which under the other releases I've had on here always worked as "color coordinated" - i.e. black jack into the hole that was black, that wasn't the case this time. Tom suggested if I had a "normal" (non-usb) headset I try to plug it in in the back. I did, and it still didn't work in the black plugin, but did and does in the green and the yellow one!

So, I doubt this is just restricted to my particular machine. If you have multiple places to plug your speakers/headsets in, try another one. It can't hurt anything!

On a side note, with Skype beta running, I do not seem to be able to make the ringing come out over the speakers, and the conversation come out on the USB headset. If anyone has a clue about that, let me know, please.
