View Full Version : [ubuntu] In very bad Situation - need help

okay yesterday i ordered a server selected the OS as ubuntu , they installed- Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS (server)

now i have ip and logins , which works with putty

finished , I know nothing about linux , ubuntu server ,commandline , putty , terminals etc etc , i m just plain paper in matter of thing name linux


i strongly believe in practicals , so i m gonna learn all that Live):P :lolflag:
now what i want to do it is , to connect it like some VNC or some gui etc

i tried to install gnome and completed it , but dont know how to run it now or make it work


sudo apt-get update - done
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop - done
sudo apt-get install gdm - done
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start - done
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg - hanged at here it ask lots of things , dunoo wat to enter or else

current situation - A black screen nothing else

please help me to make this screen color full

a step by step guide would be appreciated :mad:

Since your inevitably going to be requesting reboots from your server support, they would more than likely prefer you to request that gnome be installed and that a terminal server be configured. Than you can logon with Terminal client and spend your energy learning to administer your server.
