View Full Version : Please make a video driver forum

Currently people are posting problems about video drivers in many different forums: Multimedia, Desktop, etc.

It would be nice to have this in one place. Of course people will have to understand what is an issue with a video driver vs problems with a movie player or a desktop setting.

Having subforums for each driver or card manufacturer would be a plus.

With the current situation I feel there is no good way for bug triagers and developers focused on the Xorg stack to get a feeling for what issues people experience in this area, or to post information. Personally I use the phoronix.com forums. I would not recommend the average Ubuntu forum user to post there though.

I believe that this is a great idea.
To make a Video Driver forum or have a video category would help users and developers to find the resources they need more efficiently

and stickies can be specific for each brand:
ATI users read this first
nVidia...
Intel...

Most of my computers have ATI cards, so I try and look for users with ati issues. Many users fail to mention what brand card they have. I would usually respond to their issue by asking what brand card they have, then they would respond with a brand that I am not familiar with. Then the thread needs to be bumped to get attention because it no longer shows up as an unanswered thread.

I see this is on the Council's agenda. This idea makes sense, and should definitely be considered. Will it be used by everyone? We all know that it won't, but that is with any forum or topic. We would have somewhere for Mods to move the threads to one place for searching and browsing of issues. One thing that I find difficult in using the global (all forum) search is that I get upteen threads that have not much to do with the topic at least in the title. This would avoid wading through as much cruft. Solutions and answer faster!

Important would be to have 4 subforums in this highly required
display/videodriver forum:

Nvidia
ATI
Intel
Others

Also there should be a BIG FAT sign popping up when hitting
"New Thread" button underlining the importance to choose the right forum
for problem/topic.

I see this is on the Council's agenda.

It looks like it was turned down.

So it was, thanks for the link. Perhaps he has a point that it was hardware specific. I think the multiple sections hurt the idea. Perhaps it is wise not to have numerous (where do you draw the line?) sections for different hardware. I will come back if I have anything more thoughts to add.

I think there needs to be some sort of way to just inform users on how to recognize video issues and they need to find out what card they have.
I don't know how many posts I have seen lately where the user complains about a blank screen, or compiz wont work, and they fail to give us any clue about their system.

You see that in every sub-forum. Most new members are so intent on getting their problem solved, they forget the details.

Takeaway lesson (for life), slow down and look around. I know they world is in a big hurry, but we will get there. Now lets put on the right tires for the right road trip.

First, thank you for the suggestion, we appreciate the feedback.

This was discussed at the FC meeting and it has been decided not to add a subforum for video drivers. The staff feels the existing forums are sufficient.

I am sorry I keep forgetting about the FC meeting and to join the discussion there.

I am not so worried about the needs of the forum staff, it is the users and X experts/developers I would like to help.

I observe that today the poor users spread their X problems among different subforums because it is not clear where they should post.

I also observe the total absence of qualified X'perts, because there is no venue where they can efficiently help out or provide information, without losing their precious time on wading through non-relevant forums and posts, or seeing their information drowned in other topics.
