Hello,

I have a large pdf collection that needs to be organized badly. Does anyone know of a program that can read folders containing pdf files for the title and other data and then rename the file in a certain way? Something like "Date-Author-Title" for example.

Thanks for any insights.

Hi wirporte,

check out Zotero or Mendeley and see if they do what you want.

Zotero is an extension for Firefox. I use it to collect references and write scientific manuscripts (using the OpenOffice plugin). Zotero can store PDFs for you. I don't know off the top of my head if it can reorganize an existing PDF collection for you, but I am sure you will find out.

Mendeley is a very promising tool to manage one's PDF collection. However I must say that when I tried it (~ 6 mo ago) it crashed a lot (back than I ran it on Windows XP). It is under active development, so maybe they've "ironed out the details" by now.

Good luck!

mendeley has come a long way. I find it to be very stable now.

Agreed. It used to be very unstable on my mac at work, now working nicely. I like the bibtex abilities they're building into it too.

If your pdf collection "needs to be organized badly", Mendeley is probably not the tool for you - it will organise your pdf collection very well.

If you are certain you want it done badly, just drag them into random folders and forget where they are.
