Enlightened GNome(E17) is pretty awesome. It has changed the way I look at desktops. Here, I have shared my experiences.
E17 installation Guide:
1. General - HOWTO: installation of E17 from CVS
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=97199&highlight=enlightened+gnome
2. https://vogelweith.homeftp.net/Linux/e17_en.php
Both are good guides. The first one has a good script and support to many problems. The second one has a good description of many e17 apps/modules.
Speeding up Session startups:
I found setting all application priorities above that of gnome-wm and removing unwanted ones in ~/.gnome2/session made a huge difference. I set all my applications priority at 0, and gnome-wm at 10. I do not know how reliable this method is. But, till now, everything works ok.
Prelinking Guide- Make Ubuntu Feel Faster

Also, there are lot of good guides to speed X based on your video cards.
