Why don't members have the ability to close their own posts, and not open them? I mean, this could possibly stop some necromancy, and a responsible user could prevent flame wars. Not only that, but it could alleviate some stress from the mods.

The biggest issue I see is with malicious use of this proposed feature. Here is a scenario that is totally out of the blue, I know, but humour me.

Pseudo OP posts a naive but hopeful question.
Sock-puppet accounts are used to immediately post negative comments.
Pseudo OP closes thread.

Yeah, this thread will sink, but in the meantime everyone that sees it will ask a mod to re-open the thread so that they can reach back out to the OP that never existed. Worse yet, the troll can use this legitimate noise from concerned users to amplify the noise about mods in general. FF&H would constantly be inundated with questions about moderator conspiracies, threads that absolutely need to be re-opened, and the general decline of UF in general... not that that sort of stuff would be new to UF, it would just be more convenient than ever to get that sort of conversation off the ground.

And the cherry on the cake is that all of this additional noise gets some of the highest and most immediate search spider attention on the tubez.

That's just my initial impression, kinda rehashed from a similar conversation from a few weeks ago on a similar topic. What do you think Grant?

You can have your thread closed by just asking the mods to do so.

Yeah, that's the best way to go about it. Just use the Report feature and state that you would like your thread closed.

Opening this feature for members might create confusion: when a problem is solved, do they close the thread or mark it solved? Obviously the latter, but some people may not see that immediately.

I'd like sometimes to be able to delete a thread of mine and without troubling a mod, for example recently I got no response for one problem and wanted to try another possibly more suitable category, without clutter.

Report it to the staff & ask for it to be moved :)
