Live TV versus Recorded

What is the difference between live TV and recorded viewing? I ask because with this latest version of Mythbuntu/MythTV, I can watch hi-def recordings just fine but I cannot watch live TV. The screen goes blank and I end up having to kill the frontend process to get back to the desktop. The logs provide no useful info. Note: This is not a big deal for me since if I am going to watch live TV I will just watch it on the TV and forego the MythTV niceties.

Had this problem myself. Only way that seemed to fix it was to completely power off the back end. As in remove the power cable. And... erm... no, I ain't got a clue why this works.

Also I have noticed sometimes you think its crashed but its really taking ages to get the interactive app on the channel to load. Turn off interactive. I get this sometimes as channel 101 is BBC1 on Sky but some dreadful dating app of Freeview and if I type 101 by accident it takes ages to get going again.
