It quits back to the desktop about 50% of the time when trying to load a game. It's the version from the 9.10 repo.

I think disabling visual effects of whatever its called makes it stop doing that.

I never run games with Compiz active.

Have you tried running it from a terminal and see what (if any) error messages there are when it crashes?
