If you are running compiz (desktop effects)

after installtion it is under system > preferences > compizconfig setting manager

install compizconfig then

in compizconfig > Accessibility tab > Opacity, brightness and saturation
In window Specific settings Add a new value to 90 (play with it.....)

I was experimenting with it. I used the grab button and clicked on the compiz window. I can't get teh compiz window to display anymore. I have closed compiz and reopened it and it won't display. What should I do?

Works like a charm. For anybody wanting to know how to work the translucency in compiz the settings are on the slider and you use the grabber to select which window you want to alter.
