I thought I was about to install studio 9.04 but I have just been spooked by all the bad press re pulseaudio, wireless problems, system freezes.

Is it really that bad? I have not got the skill/energy/time to do many of the things I have read about to try and fix some of the problems and there is no guarantee it will ever work it seems.

The other thing that worries me is that although there are several posts on various problems I dont see any authoritative voice from the studio developers showing themselves. Are there any experts willing to help out or will I be on my own?

Many thanks,

Simon.

I'll be using an Hp 6735s (http://www.linlap.com/wiki/HP-Compaq+6735S)

Hi I'm one of the Ubuntu Studio developers. Most of the team doesn't frequent these forums very often, they're very active on Launchpad though.

My recommendation is to wait a week for Karmic Koala 9.10's release. Install that. It's awesome.

I had lots of problems with Studio 9.04, problems booting and shutting down, problems with real time kernel and nvidia graphics card and problems with wireless networking.

Reverted to 8.04 Hardy and haven't had a single problem, so my opinion is unless you really want a feature available in 9.04 its not worth it.

I thought I was about to install studio 9.04 but I have just been spooked by all the bad press re pulseaudio, wireless problems, system freezes.

Is it really that bad?No it's not. I have 4 completely different machines running 9.04 with Ubuntu Studio packages and they run just fine. No freezes, wireless works on my net- and notebook and concerning PulseAudio, I don't use it for music production so I disabled it.

The other thing that worries me is that although there are several posts on various problems I dont see any authoritative voice from the studio developers showing themselves. Are there any experts willing to help out or will I be on my own? You're not on your own considering a UbuntuStudio dev replying right away ;) And I've been using GNU/Linux myself for over 10 years now, the last two years on an exclusive basis since I decided to do all my recording and production with GNU/Linux. So I know my way a bit.

I'll be using an Hp 6735s (http://www.linlap.com/wiki/HP-Compaq+6735S)Looks good, 9.04 will probably run without problems. I'd recommend using the radeon open source drivers unless the Ati provided readeonhd drivers work well. The open source drivers lack any power management for the GPU so batterylife will be shorter.

I haven't had any major problems with Ubuntu Studio. However, I would wait until 9.10 is released (7 days, right now). That will save you several hours downloading and installing updates once you get it installed.

Many thanks for all the useful comments.

It seems I'll probably save time if I wait for Karmic.

Simon.
