xen + blank screen

Hi,

I am trying to run xen on my laptop with hardy on it.
I installed ubuntu-xen-server with apt-get
Then (according to the tutorial) i installed another patched kernel
But when i try to boot into it all i get is a black screen and i cannot get a terminal on <ctrl><alt>F1
I tried to add vga=771 to the boot options in grub which did not make any difference
I can boot to the other kernels but that does not solve my purpose
I have to run this kernel itself

update : I tried changing the vga option to a text mode and that wouldnt change the result
