Tascam US 122 - Light on, No sound

Hey all.

I looked through all the other how-to's and troubleshooting threads that I could find for the Tascam US 122... but nothing seems to be working for me.

I followed these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TASCAM_US-122 to get the light on, but when I try and test the sound with system > preferences > sound > "test sound" (under "sound capture")... nothing happens when I strum the guitar... furthermore, when I click "okay" in the "test sound" box that pops up while testing, the program crashes!

Okay.
So, minor update.

I was able to capture sound okay when I tested the sound under preferences > sound, and I was able to hear it okay as well... but it still wouldn't work in jackd/qjackctl... and those programs would freeze up...

Now the preferences > sound thing is freezing up as well.

Please can someone help me out?
-- why is my computer freezing, and how do I stop it from doing it?
-- how do I get this card to work in jack?
