I just found this posted at Blenderwars.com and couldnt find any mention of it on the forum. It appears that this software is "in development" and documentation is sparse. Anywho, check it out if your interested in film style animations.

Also heres a write up on it.

Whoa, there's actually an open-source animator? Thanks for saving me a whole lot of money from resorting to Macromedia Flash. :D
And according to this movie (http://www.bridgetone.com/voria/movies/prologue.mov) (found here (http://www.synfig.com/gallery.php)) made exclusively in Synfig, I'm DEFINITELY getting this. \\:D/

For Dapper keep an eye on: http://www.adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/03/02/synfig-ubuntu-debs/
The right honorable Patrick McFarland has packaged them up for ubuntu, although I haven't gotten it to run successfully myself yet.
I installed synfig and synfigstudio but when I run synfigstudio I get the following error:
GThread-ERROR **: GThread system may only be initialized once.
I'm running Dapper. If anyone else tries it out, can you post here how it goes?
I also tried the repos mentioned on this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=47617&page=7&highlight=synfigstudio) with the same results
Thanks

@jeffc313 (f4l)
It looks almost dead (or just suspended)- there hasnt been a new release for almost a year.
If it were still in development it would look promising.
EDIT:
just got it running in dapper- very smooth so far ^_^
but whyyy do they always have to have separate windows like in GIMP :(

It's alive and well now. A new version was just released which fixes lots of bugs. This GThread-ERROR bug wasn't fixed in the new release, because it was never reported and I only just noticed it today, but it's fixed in svn (r908) and will be in the next release.
Please report any synfig bugs in the bug tracker, so they will be seen and fixed.
