In all honesty the one that was rejected before is the best one, imo.

These are all pretty good, but nothing so far that I've heard has beat the classic old sound from the earlier releases...

I do agree 100% ;-)
This is work in progress, though I'm stalled at the moment. This is a very hard task, because it all depends on taste and there's a lot of "requirements".

Hopefully I will have something more to "show" in the Lucid Linx cycle.

I'm using ubuntu since hardy. Could someone tell me where to get that sound? I'd like to hear it, because the current login sound is going to drive me nutz

I like the first and the owl one. Only the first one I think is a little too high pitched, at least on my speakers its a little piercing to the ears.

I thought they were all awesome. #3 I liked the most, but seems everyone likes #5 with the most votes. Id be happy if any of the 5 where on Karmic.

Thanks Sand & Mercury, it certainly sounds more classy than the current drum sound.
But I think i'll use the owl sound for the login, i really liked it :D

My identi.ca account is benevolent97 (https://identi.ca/benevolent97).

Click on the "heart" which is next to the message to add it to favorites. If enough people make it their favorites, it will be added on the popular notices; which means that many people will be able to see it.

The owl sound would get my vote. How about a Whale song sound.

I have no idea how to add these sounds to my Karmic install. I can't find the correct dialogue box any more. Anyone know how I can set a new sound for start-up?

Yes, that dialog is gone, besides some others (services for example). You must replace the current login sound. Do this in terminal:

sudo mv /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login-backup.ogg

Let's suppose you have the sound you liked in the desktop, and its name is owl.ogg:
sudo mv /home/USER_NAME/Desktop/owl.ogg /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg

You could do it too by running nautilus with root permissions and copying your sound to this folder /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ with this name "destop-login.ogg".

Makes sense - thanks for the reply.

Okay - you get brownie points if you know how to do this: If I wanted to randomize it, how would I go about that? I have about 5 sounds to choose from and getting something new is actually kind of cool and surprising, you know?

Thanks!

Why would you want to change that sound? Whenever I hear it booting, I think "that's the sound of freedom!"

Why would you want to change that sound? Whenever I hear it booting, I think "that's the sound of freedom!"

The reason you think that is because you associate that sound with Ubuntu. If one of these were made default then you'd then associate it with Ubuntu and then 'the sound of freedom'.

The existing one isn't even what it's always sounded like either, as sandandmecury posted the earlier sound (http://sandandmercury.net/junk/desktop-login.ogg)
