Have a X-fi soundcard and using Rythembox it static noise and thats about it. With Movieplayer ( the default application ) its on the quiet side and has some mild hissing and its really not good for listening to music. And Amorak just crashed and wouldnt play anything.

Now the strange thing is, I am not sure what application Ubuntu uses, is that if you let your mouse hover over a mp3 it starts playing that song BUT it sounds so much better then movie player..its soundquality is something I could listen to :-)

anyway, need something for Ubuntu 9.04 that will work

Go System > Preferences > Sound. Make sure your playback devices are set to... well, whatever you want them set as. Mine are all set to ALSA as that's what I use.
