Hello, I'm new here and to ubuntu. I'm going to install ubuntu!... and to have Windows and ubuntu both installed in my system until i get comfortable with ubuntu.
I have never used ubuntu.
Now I'm preparing my PC for ubuntu.
First question. Long story short, my PC was installed with Windows XP and partitioned this way:
C: 68 GB (Windows installed)
D: 59 GB
and 337 GB of unallocated space.

I've been watching some videos and it says ubuntu should be installed on the same drive as Windows. In this case, how much space should i leave for Windows and how much space for ubuntu? After I format my unallocated drive to E:, can ubuntu still make use of this space? (stupid question?)

Also, i've only been watching videos in which ubuntu installed on Vista, which allows you to shrink the drive, and XP doesn't. So how would i install it? Forgive my ignorance. Any help would be appreciated.

well maybe you should consider installing ubuntu on drive D: , i think that could save you a lot of troubles... i allways do it this way... sawes a lot of trouble with windows...

also is that really 337 GB of unallocated space? ain't that 337 MB? in case it really is 337 GB maybe you should consider using this gigantic free space for ubuntu partition...

as for possible disc E: answer is yes after formating it to ntfs or some linux native partition ubuntu will be able to use it...

p.s.: as newbee/after 3 years with linux I still cant say I'm sommething more/ to newbee i think you should "measure/check twice and cut/format once" ;) hope this was helpfull somehow...

Ubuntu Doesn't require a whole lot of space. If in fact that's 337gb of free space you could do as mr. ivan suggested and install there if it's a typo and if your comfortable with your current partition setup, you could replace your D: drive with an ext partion and use it for Ubuntu. As far as dual booting with xp here's a great guide with screenshots to help you do just that.

How to dual boot Windows XP and Linux (XP installed first) (http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed _first.htm)

If you have any questions feel free to post and I'm sure somebody around here will help.

We've posted regarding partitioning many times previously, both here and other places as well

However, these might help a little:
