9.04 installation problem

Hi, new to Ubuntu so apologies if this is a basic question
Installed version 9.04 to run along Win XP. Installed OK but when resizing partition I did not choose the manual option but the installation default automatic option.
Rebooted and all seemed OK. Ubantu opened OK as did Win XP on dual boot.
However today Ubantu boots up through username and password and desktop opens but as clear screen with no tabs so cannot go any further.
Win XP still opens OK

looks like you messed up with some important pkg. when the login screen comes, press ctrl+alt+F2. enter your username, password and type:


sudo apt-get install gdm

and when complete, reboot.

I have tried this but get message " dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run sudo dpkg-configure-a to correct the problem. I don't know what this means. Any ideas ?
