I've got Doom 3 installed on the system listed in my signature. It flys when I'm running windows, but its pretty choppy in linux, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. I'm using the fglrx drivers in the repos, with the 686 kernel.

Man thats the only thing I can think it could be. Im runnin' Quake 4 on 5.1 with a nVidia card and I have a little less of a machine than your sig. AMD XP 2600+, 1 gig RAM, nVidia 6800 OC 128RAM. Not sure of the framerate but its very playable @ 1920x1600 on my Dell 2405FPW. Maybe its just the GFX card?

I'm beginning to think so as well, but it works fine in windows. I'd get an upgrade to a 6800GS if I had the money.

fglrx are the official ATI drivers...

But the reason you have poor performance is that ATI's drivers for Linux are far worse compared to their Windows drivers, I hear the situation's been slowly improving but wouldn't hold my breath. Nvidia on the other hand treats Linux as a first-class citizen and their Linux drivers are just as good as the ones for Windows. Neither are open source/free though, but I don't think any free drivers work with games as new as D3...
