This might sound like a simple question so bear with me.

When the official version of Karmic is released at the end of the month, do I have to download an .iso image and install it that way? Or is is possible to upgrade via a live update through the terminal?

Cheers

You can live upgrade. When 9.10 is ready there will be an option in the application software updater which allow you to upgrade to 9.10

For a safety, always make a backup first or have your /home on a separated partitions.

I dont keep anything of importance on my internal hard-drive. If it messes up I will just start from scratch, albeit reluctantly.

Before you start testing 9.10 (note: you're warned it can break from one day to another, and without the right knowledge it can be tedious experience), read this first: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1161570

and extra warning before
