I still don't get how to use Synaptics to install things and now I need to install AVG to keep Total Security from fouling up my laptop. I hit the download button on the AVG website and it gave me the zip file. I couldn't find it on Synaptics so I double-clicked the icon on my Desktop and used System Installer to install it. It said AVG was installed but there is no icon anywhere and there was no opportunity to configure the settings so I doubt that it installed correctly. I was able to find a bunch files that start with avg by using Catfish but I have no idea which one to click to get the app started.

Installation manager said the same version was already installed but I am reinstalling just to be sure. It's finished installing supposedly but there is still no AVG icon, there was no visible configuration. What am I missing here?

Oh! Are there any antivirus programs monitor constantly instead of having to be turned on to do their job?

So how do I start it?

Given that AVG is a command line function, how do I go about starting it?

You really dont need AVG in linux as it covers windows viruses, linux has no real viruses that can affect it.
You are safe.

It's true, I figure he probably wants AVG to make sure he doesn't have viruses that might affect an alternate windows system. (Carried through USB, email, etc)

I have never installed AVG on linux, but you may be able to find some sort of configuration by typing "avg" or "avg-antivirus" into the terminal. I'm just blindly guessing here though. :P

Mines says that the package is of bad quality and should not be downloaded. What to do with that?

A lot has changed over the last few years. At the moment, your best bet is to visit http://free.avg.com/ and download the linux-friendly from there: use the .deb file appropriate for Ubuntu.
