I wasn't sure where to post this question. I posted it here because all of my search results had similar information here. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and have LIRC installed and working. Also I have Boxee installed and working along with HuluDesktop. I can exit both programs with my remote and launch them with the remote while on the Ubuntu desktop. I am not using Mythbuntu.

1. Is it possible to navigate Ubuntu with your remote? i.e. have the arrow keys move the mouse around or type my password into the update manager when it pops up?

2. Is there a way to have the shutdown menu (with log off, reboot, shutdown, etc) pop up when pushing a button on my remote?

Thanks for you help in advance.

A while ago I create a small python app that maps remote keys to fake x key pushs

http://code.google.com/p/jkeys/

I mostly use the code to allow my 4 years old to play snake with a joypad ;)

there is also irexec if you wont to map a remote key at any time to a command
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/man1/irexec.1.html
I use irexec to make the power button on the remote restart mythfrontend
