I don't see much around here about it but there is a fantastic old-skool FPS with a great storyline that has been open-sourced: the Marathon series.

The install is an rpm (blech) but I can confirm that alien makes it a usable .deb in Dapper. Copy the maps to the install directory and you're good to go. The 2 player network is SUPER fun and I tend to play it with my friends before other FPS. Its very much from an age when the FPS wasn't a category and so has lots of personality.
