Ok I have some questions about wine that I hope can be answered.
I have been running Ubuntu for about half a year and I have fallen in love. For everything I need to do from graphics to text Ubuntu has an application I can use. I am thankful that I wasn't that deeply invested in the windows O/S. In my time spent with Ubuntu I have grown more comfortable and famliar with its workings than I ever have with windows.
The orginal reason I switched was a fake security program installed on windows claming that my computer was under attack. It was a reliefe to find out that Linux is very secure and 99%-100% free of viruses and has none of the security problems that windows has.
All right I'm curious about wine there is no real aplications that I need it for I have just been playing with a lot of things since I have had Ubuntu and was just interested in seeing what wine can do.
Now I know that security for Linux is top notch but how is it for wine since wine is a Windows like interface? Can spyware install on wine? Can wine cause any other problems? Am I better off not bothering with it if I don't need it? My only desire if to play around with it to see what it can and cannot do. At this point I really don't need it for anything major.

Wine just runs windows programs in your linux environment. I've been told it will run viruses as well. So just because you are in Linux it doesn't mean you are safe. Windows viruses can run under wine pretty good I'm told.

FYI.. linux is as secure as the habits of the person behind the computer. While It's pretty secure, there are things that can be done to weaken the environment or destroy the security. Like clicking on a link in an email you received. There are way of getting around security. Always.

Pure FUD. Last post regarding the "testing" of wine running a virus was a complete failure. Sure a few of them got some files extracted but they were not designed for linux and thus will fail 99% of the time. Remember, wine is only a compatibility layer, NOT an emulator.

So to sum it up, don't install stupid things you don't trust and you won't have a problem.
