My dvd player can only read Dolby Digital, dts, mpeg-1 or 2,LPCM. I have to therefore convert an AVI file to a format it likes. I would like to play Crouching tiger, hidden dragon in Manderin with English subtitles. If I find a separate English subtitle file can I just add it to the DVD or do I have to do some form of conversion before it will be recognised?

My dvd player says:

You can select the default subtitle language if supported by that DVD disc.

How do I set up subtitles on the DVD player as above?

Since your DVD player doesn't support xvid/divx video files with external subtitles you must convert your video to DVD format.

There are a few good programs for this job.

Read this How to author a DVD using 2ManDVD in Linux (http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/170/26) and How to create a custom DVD using DeVeDe (http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/75/26/).

Here is how to install 2ManDVD in Jaunty (http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Jaunty#2ManDVD).
