I would like to make two operating systems use the same /home.

I am going to install Debian. However I do not plan to abandon using ubuntu as my primary operating system anytime soon.

Will file permissions become a problem?

Is it possible to have an applications like thunderbird or firefox be used on both operating systems and share the same user data?

Are there any other types of data that I may not be thinking of that are operating system dependent? Will their be file formatting differences that make sharing any of the above mentioned files or any other files (that I might not be aware of) between operating systems not possible?

How should I begin to tackle my problem?

You may be able to use one home partition for both distributions, but due to different file version, you may have a problem with configuration files.
