Bizarre Ubuntu Behavior

I am using a Dell mini-10 and the classic GNOME desktop (Hardy Heron) of Dell's customized OS. The Dell desktop sucks.

1.While in any browser, when I type in any field, the page re-directs and aborts. My pain-in-the-*** workaround is that I must open a text document in another desktop, and copy/paste to EVERY field to prevent re-direct,,
2.Even the OpenOffice Writer workaround fails. I have to maintain constant visual contact with my cursor because, at any moment, it might jump to another part of my text—it could be anywhere, like in two previous paragraphs, and start wiping out my text. Plus, the page jiggles rapidly back and forth in its workspace. Also, in copy/pasting text, the highlighted text bounces back and forth,
3.Sometimes my workspaces flip back and forth by themselves.

I'm assuming that these issues are part of the same problem. Maybe they're not. I'm assuming that the problem is software (OS) related and not a hardware issue.

The question is: short of re-installing the OS, how do I troubleshoot this? I don't want to waste 10 hours wiping my hdd and re-configuring, only to have the same problems.
