I am at 8.04 Ubuntu on a new A90 machine from dell. Dell made some modifications to the desktop, and I have to assume to some other things. I see that native Ubuntu is at 9.04. Is there any reason I should not install a vanilla 9.04 Ubuntu, and toss the Dell modifications?

I have read more of the discussion. I guess I don't need to know. I can create a Live USB if I really get motivated; otherwise wait till I get a lot more familiar with Ubuntu before I start thinking about messing with the OS. :guitar: I suppose everybody is smart and things are close enough to the way they should be.

AFAIK there is no official Dell 9.04 for their hardware... on my mini 10n there is an option to use straight 8.04. Is there not that on your machine?
I think 9.04 wil run just fine on just about any machine. The only way to know for sure is to try it with a LiveCD or USB.

On my A90, there was an option to use some funny Dell start-screen, which has a 5 by 3 grid, or some such, before getting to what I took to be the regular Ubuntu desktop. I selected to skip that grid. That cant be all that Dell did to customize Ubuntu 8.04 however, so I haven't seen how to get to a 'straight 8.04' Ubuntu. [And for the time being at least, I have decided to not fiddle with the OS. I installed skype - which I regret, and the current firefox - which disappeared inside somewhere.]

I do believe there's a Dell Factory DVD sticky on the top of this forum as a sticky that provides 9.04 with video drivers and flash preinstalled (maybe even some other codecs).
I installed 9.04 on my mini 10v without any hiccups. If regular 8.04 works for you, I doubt you would run into any issues with 9.04.
Again, you could just wait 26 days for the newest release and save yourself some time. Or even try the beta.

My mini 10n works perfectly with the original 8.04 from Dell... I'll wait for the official upgrade... I use 9.10 Beta on my main box and it works fine too.
