Now that I have your attention, is there anything like Age of Empires for Linux? Yes, I know I can run it under Wine, but I'm looking for something open-source that we could improve upon. The original AOE2 is crash prone, has a horrible AI, and is limited to low resolutions, but it's also extremely addicting and fun over a LAN =). I play it more than any other, newer game. Imagine AOE2, but with high res images and improved AI, running naively on Linux. It would be awesome. So........
How hard would it be 'clone' Age of Empires II on Linux? And where would I start? Any ideas? :)

Man, I've been waiting for this. You got my support even though I don't know programming... might just root you on maybe?

Thanks. 0 A.D. looks great! If anyone finds this thread hoping for a better AOE, this looks like your best bet.

I wouldnt say a better AOE, as AOE wasn't very good when thinking back. 0 A.D. is just so much improvement in gameplay vs AOE.

Seems like they have been developing 0ad for quite some time now. I checked out the source and built it to see how it was looking. The game has a good feel to it and nice graphics but there is still a lot of work to be done. Wildfire is looking for help and this looks like a good opportunity for anyone trying to get some experience coding games.

the very best would be an ages of empires LEGACY
you place the cdrom and here it is under linUX !!
same as dune legacy
Install Guide
-Extract Archive
-Place DUNE.PAK in the 'data' directory (DUNE.PAK comes from the original Dune 2 game)
-Run 'Dune2 Data Extractor'
--Answer yes to any questions, it wants to delete temporary files
-Run Dune Legacy.exe
INSTALL.txt (END)

I have now freecnc, dune 2, open red alert, for my old pc. it works fine.
I guess that AOE for all versinos, new and old, is the best of best for strategy.

Maybe we could contact Ensemble Studios if they are willing to make it open source? I think AOE 1 or 2 might have a chance, because we could say we want to optimize it and it's an old game.

Ensemble shut down after Halo Wars, the only other people we could contact would be MS...good luck with that.

if you look at this page http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/developer/rules.htm you can see that we are able to use all their artwork from AOE, I'm not sure if there are people that want to make an engine for it thought
