View Full Version : [ubuntu] iMac 4g 800mhz dead ethernet port, alternatives?

I acquired an old iMac 4g ppc and the install of 9.04 went flawlessly. After a few hours of tinkering, I came to find out that the Ethernet port is completely dead.

It does not register any kind of activity or lights either on my router or my DSL gateway. I tried three different cables, and all three cables worked on all the other pcs in my home, so I know it's the Ethernet port.

With this being an Apple product, what kind of usb/firewire alternatives can be used with Ubuntu 9.04?

I know there are USB to Ethernet, and I know there are wireless cards that work with Ubuntu but I do not know if they are going to work on this older product.

If anyone can enlighten me on a workaround, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am kind of leaning towards going wireless, but I am open to all suggestions.

Thanks!

I found out that there is no support for usb wireless adapters on ubuntu PowerPC.... I bought an ASUS last year, it worked perfectly under OSX but couldn't get it working on Linux.... I asked here, but no response so far....

Did you try a USB to Ethernet connection? That's rather troubling news considering it's just the ethernet that isn't working on that computer. Maybe it'll be an offline linux learning tool *shrug*

I never tried that... It could work, but I don't know how to do that.... Have you ask on the Ubuntu IRC Channel?
